Victory Over Temptation

WHEN: Fri Feb 13, 7:30pm
WHERE: Carey Building downstairs

Temptations are a normal part of the Christian life. The good news is that God has provided ways to help us have victory over them. We will look at some of the truth and lies of temptation. Our speakers will share how God has equipped us to have victory over sexual temptation. During this time, we will be addressing some of the good questions submitted earlier, part of which will be in separate men and women sessions.

We have the privilege of hearing from some of our own ACC members, Roger and Ilan Huang, speak on "Victory Over Temptation." They are a married couple who have served at ACC for many years, currently serving on the Prayer Team and recently led the ACC English Concert of Prayer. Roger has taught Discovery Group classes, including one similar to the topic that will be discussed, and Ilan has been a part of the ACC women's ministry, Tapestry. They have four beautiful children--Bethany, Hannah, Joshua, and baby Elizabeth.

This is really an important topic. For a single guy living in our sex filled culture. It can be real tough.

Things God has shown me are that :

1. The Pursuit of Holiness - Jerry Bridges - p16.
"God wants us to walk in obedience - not victory." Obedience is oriented toward God; victory is oriented toward self.
Life is not about me or about my glory. IF I desire or have a passion to know and delight in God and desire His glory; then obedience and the by-product of victory comes naturally.

2. Sex is not a biological need, when in fact it's a desire. I can live without sex, but not water or food.
To be able to have sex is a gift from God saved for marriage.
A book that helped me see this was "When People are Big and God is Small"

3. We need to fight for purity. The sermon on the mount Matt 5:8 says

8 “Blessed are athe pure in heart, for they shall see God.
If we are not pure of heart how can we say that we love Him or have fellowship with him.

I love John Piper - he has a sermon on lust in 1 Thes 4:3-8 that really impacted me.

3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 8 Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Definitely recommend John Piper's book - Desiring God - Meditations of a Christian Hedonist. Life changing.

May God use the coming Cornerstone evening in a mighty way.

-Blessings.
