Evangelism

EDIT: We want to thank Alice to helping out with worship and to Jason and TJ Poon who spoke to us about evangelism. They shared with us of some of the inhibitions of why we don't evangelize more often or what prevents us from sharing our stories with other people. A big issue is unbelief - "oh ye of little faith". Unbelief and fear are opposites of faith. Faith counters all and gives us the strength and courage to know that God is in charge and He is ultimately the one who leads people to Him. One very effective way of being a witness (btw, witnessing is not something we do, it's who we are) - is to share your own story with people. People love hearing stories so share it!

WHEN: Friday, February 29, 2008, 7:30 PM

WHERE: Lighthouse Carey Building, ACC

This week Jason Poon and his wife TJ will be speaking about
evangelism. We often feel ineffective at evangelism but what are we doing about it? How can we change that? (March 7 - next week - Alex will be leading us on an evangelism outreach on 6th street to put it into practice and really make it part of our lives.) Because we are a Chinese-American fellowship, how is our local missions field different from that of Caucasian
churches? Jason and TJ have recently joined Epic (Campus Crusade's
Asian-American branch) and have a special passion for minorities not normally
effectively reached by mainstream Caucasian churches. How can our love for our Lord and His extravagant sacrificial love enable us to be walking testimonies everywhere we go? Please join us this Friday to learn and know the importance of the task Jesus left us - to go preach His good news to all the nations baptizing them in His Name. (Matt 28:19).

How to Be Rich

WHEN: Friday, February 8, 2008, 7:30 PM

WHERE: Lighthouse Carey Building, ACC

"Did you know that the topic of money is talked about more in the New Testament than Salvation? We spend our whole life trying to get rich. It is now time that we learn how to be

rich."

Houston's Simon Lee will be talking to us this Friday night about the topic of money and what it means to be rich. Please bring your Bible, pens, and notepads to Cornerstone on Friday. Since Faye will be staying in Houston, Simon needs to leave that night to go back to Houston. However, there will be another activity after Cstone.

EDIT: (Notes from Friday)

RICH PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE WITH OPTIONS.
(Some people really do not have any options. Take a missions trip to Africa or China and you'll really see the poverty firsthand. Participate and give your time and heart to an organization that you are really passionate about. Invest your heart and they'll invest their heart in you - long term committment to helping out an organization).

1 Timothy 6:17 - Paul talks about two things that we need to do:
1.) Repent of arrogance -
When we look at the poor - we judge them for what they don't have
When we look at the rich - we judge them for what they do have and what they do with it
We think that we know better... this is arrogance. Must repent and ask for forgiveness.
2.) Your hope in wealth
(best way to tell if you put your hope in wealth is to ask your parents or best friends honestly and humbly)
How to tell if you put money as your first priority in life?
a.) Does your lifestyel or debt impede your ability to live?
b.) Does fear of not having enough impede your giving? How much money is enough for you to be satisfied and comfortable?
c.) Which of these statements create most anxiety for you? There is NO God OR there is NO money in the bank?
d.) Do you have money in the bank but no peace in your hearts? Even if you dont' get a paychet, do you get your peace from God?

1 Timothy 6:18 - this is what Paul wants Timothy to tell rich people - "Command them to DO GOOD, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share... so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life."

Foundations are a great way to give your money and keep it for charity and help you be generous. (ask us for more information on this).

Your first fruits should be for God. Your choice foods should be there and not for yourself. HOW? Mark your calendars when the paycheck deposits and predetermine your giving and give to God first.

The amount to give, the amount to tithe should be an amount that God lays on your heart. It should reflect your own personal journey between you and God. Let's be a generation that gives lavishly.

Challenge: Giving hurts, when you give, it should hurt. if you're too comfortable about the amount you give, UP IT! It calls for faith and obedience in God.

Prayer and Worship Night

Friday, January 25, 2008, 7:30 PM, Lighthouse Carey Building, ACC

Annie Feng's Tuesday girls' small group is leading us in a time of prayer and worship this Friday.

In 1 Timothy 2:1, 3, Paul says, "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone... This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." Paul believed in the power of prayer so much that in verse 8 - he even writes,"I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing". Songs of worship are our very own prayers and words of praise and adoration to our God. Please come join us for this time of prayer and worship.

Afterwards, come to Ti's home to enjoy some games and comforting-perfect-for-the-season-homemade chili. 10:30pm, 12227 Antoinette Pl. 78727, 832-647-2293

Notes for 1/18/2008 - Knowing God

Detailed Notes of Speaker:

ACC's own Leslie Keng shared his personal stories with Cornerstone on how he came to know the Lord. In 1 Kings 17:7-16, Elijah assures a widow that the Lord will always provide for her with a never ending jar of flour and jug of oil, and in 2 Kings 4:8-37, the Lord saves a mother's dead son. Through these verses, Leslie spoke of times when your path in life is hardly ever what you envision it to be. Sometimes, God gives you a blessing and an open door (like the woman's son) and sometimes, you are faced with your biggest fear and need to make a decision. However, God's character never changes and can overcome any circumstance. Leslie challenged us when he asked "What is your dream? What is your greatest fear? If God takes away your dream and makes your greatest fear a reality, would you still desire God?".

Leslie Keng
  • 1 Kings 17:7-16
    • Elijah and the never ending jar of flour and oil for the widow
  • 2 Kings 4:8-37
    • God saves a woman's dead son
  • What's your dream? What's your greatest fear?
    • fear of failure like 1 Kings, fear of being insignificant, fear of death of loved ones like 2 Kings
  • Veggietales founder Phil Vischer
    • company went bankrupt
    • new company called "Jellyfish" because jellyfish can only swim up and down (ourselves) but the current (God) actually moves them
  • Leslie's story
    • he and his wife had to make several financial and life changing decisions
    • through prayer, God told them what to do even though it was risky
    • God has always provided for Leslie and his family through tough times
  • Microsoft Word
    • most people only use about 20% of Microsoft Word's abilities
    • maybe we're only using about 20% of what God wants for us (sanctification process)
    • For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

How to Read the Bible

November 9th, 2007, 7:30 PM, Lighthouse (Carey) Building ACC

Do you ever wonder what is the right way to read the Bible? Have you ever read a passage and not really understand what you just read? Do you want to know how you can "hear" and "listen" to God when you read the Bible? Do you want to know what the passage means? Come this Friday to Cornerstone and hear our very own Tina Tsuei teach us about how to read the Bible. Tina Tsuei is the wife of Pastor Gaylord and has two kids - Charis and Silas. So, please join us as she teaches us about God's live Word - His magnificent love story to us.

Evangelism Outreach

November 10th, 2007

This Saturday, Alex Chen will be leading a team to witness to the lost in downtown Austin. We will witness 1-on-1 by giving out Gospel tracts and speaking with the lost. Set aside your fears and expectations and remember that Chris is worthy of our love and obendience, regardless of the results or what we get out of it. Meet at Alex's home at 7 PM to carpool (contact him at 512.560.0583 or alexchen@alumni.rice.edu).

REVEAL Survey

This is very important to our church! Time frame November 5th to November 26th!!

As a church, we want to do everything we can to support your spiritual growth. So we're asking everyone who calls ACC their church home to take a Spiritual Life Survey at www.revealnow.com/SLsurvey/?church=203 (please be sure this survey is passed on to your fellowships and small groups). The survey findings will help shape our decisions in creating the best possible ministry strategies to bring us closer to God. Thanks in advance for participating!

**Please complete the survey no later than 11/26** If you have any questions, please ask the Leadership Team (Pastor Gaylord, Andy Lee, Chris Chun, Jamie Ricks, Julian Chen, Alex Chen, Winston Woo, Geoff Prewett, Steve Luong, Bob Chin, Josh Chen) or email Marilyn at maril@alumni.rice.edu.

[Here are a few clarifications as you're going through the survey:
1) We only have "Main adult services" (not young adult or mid-week services).
2) Pastor Gaylord has been pastoring for 6-10 years.]

John Ortberg - Esther

November 2nd, 2007, 7:30 PM

This week we'll be watching John Ortberg's sermon on Esther. He has a great explanation of Esther and very challenging message on following God whole-heartedly. This is one of the messages that has challenged me (Geoff) the most, and some of what Ortberg says has become part of my vocabulary, because he speaks about our root sin, the sin that invisibly underlies all that we do. Our theme for this year is "Love God and the fruit will follow" and Ortberg gives a very concrete way of identifying the main things that get in our way of loving God.

I hope you will join us this Friday at 7:30 pm in the Carey (Lighthouse) building and hear John Ortberg speak on our shadow mission.

Troy's Adventure

October 26th, 2007, 7:30 PM
